MINUTES

(Pre)Launch Event

DB: Originally had event lined up at the Marlborough - however they lost their licence. So we now have a support slot as part of Radio One Live Alternative. Dates [tbc] are 4th October, approx. 40 minutes with sound and video. All agreed would be good opportunity to use as a pre-launch/publicity builder/call for artists.

PB: Website needs to be up asap - need to sort logo, branding etc.

DB: Do not follow Remix Reading Launch Event example - too much work. be aware of being too ambitious. Keep the event small enough for people taking part to handle.

DB + P: small live venues played/dj'd on a weekly, monthly basis to create Remix Brighton presence. suggested a set that is constant flux and bought back "remixed" each time. Also, local music will attract local people to come to events.

EGJ: be aware of audience / performer relationship - preferred participation

DB: some - but not all - of the live events should encourage the 'audience' to become [part of] the act. instead try to foster collective / creative networks.

Freshers Fair: University of Brighton, University of Sussex

DB: get a presence at start of uni to find people interested in helping/participating ? ACTION - P: to organise desk space etc. for brighton ? ACTION - EGJ: to organise desk space etc. for sussex ? ACTION - DB & TBB: to assist [photocopying/sitting at desk etc.]

Funding

EGJ: previous proposal of 150,000 GBP can be problematic. Takes longer to process, organise, calculate etc.

PB: We should set up the site to demonstrate intent and then ask for funding

DB: mentioned a PRS fund of 3000 GBP - would be interesting to see if PRS were willing to fund it.

EGJ: Why 150,000 - too ambitious

DB: We should aim high, R/B should be viewed as an ongoing project

EGJ: R/R had little or no funding for various projects, but noted artists etc. should be paid.

RLR: are there other sources we can find?

?: talk concentrated on targeting best press to approach

EGJ: contacting artist directly got the best response for R/R

Site Design

?: purpose to encourage physical meetings

?: site should be simple to navigate, up/download

DB: techies should not over code creativity [problem with R/R]

DB: artists prefer samples to full tracks

DB: format of uploads should facilitate [as much as possible] remixing potential. this requires more space on servers. Also needs to be easier to upload source files.

?: some disagreements were made with these statements but i didn't catch them

Any Other Business

all: lots of discussion [e.g. EGJ: DB too dominant] about how to run, organise and proceed within meetings. no firm actions decided.

all: chairing was important in keeping order, balancing arguments, moving discussion on

EGJ: techniques we could use - thumbs up etc. - to signal to chair position etc.

RLR: rotate chairing responsibility

DB: limit meetings to an hour - people will get bored and not come back otherwise

?: chair and minutes need to be "neutral" [i.e TBB + MM were often part of the discussion when they should have been fulfilling their role or their position/role meant they couldn't fully engage when necessary].

DB: point of meet is not to answer Q's but to raise them

EGJ: if more people come to next meeting we need to engage with them, so the clique of this group does not ostracise them

EGJ: EGJ is doing 'everything'
