We are curently coordinating our tech efforts via the following wiki page (as well as the mailing lists):
http://www.freeculture.org.uk/wiki/RemixProject
This inculdes a list of ideas for site improvements. Please look there first before adding ideas here. - EGJ
A nice halfway house would be...
A wiki front end that is linked to a cool CSS
The allows us to update, change, edit new add to it ad infinitum..
Backend is the remix reading code.. we just link to it as 'Library' or whatever...
That way at least the front is nice and changeable and not limited to the current look and feel of the RR site (which I happen to think not very attractive) but obviously when you go to the library that will have to suffice,
And if anyone doubts the problems associated with website upkeep with Drupal please look at http://www.freeculture.org.uk/wiki/RemixProject/WebSiteTODO
Essentially the backend needs to be linked to getContent and addContent which could be direct deep-linking. We are then also able to link to *any* other library (i.e. YouTube/Flickr/archive.org) and be open about how people share their content.
As regards people having problems understanding the license, getting it organised etc - well, that would be a problem with any system. and to be fair, using a creative commons license requires them to make a choice and understand what they are doing. It has legal implications and they should be conscious of it.
I have shamelessly stolen the code for the Creative Commons website to experiment with here http://www.libresociety.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Site/LibreSociety
This is a wiki called PMwiki which has really nice templates and I think would present an excellent front door to the RB project.
Anyway, take a look (it is quite rough but you'll get the idea). I especially like the idea of linking to the other remix sites through the top right pull down menu)
Best
